What Is Your Biggest Problem?

What are you struggling with right now? An addiction? Self-harm? Toxic relationships? When someone is working to change their ways or leave behind old habits, but they repeatedly fall back into old practices. It can be devastating!

You want to be different and do the right things in your heart. You even promise God and yourself that you will change, but that change only lasts for a while. Nonetheless, all it takes is a trigger, disappointment, an argument, a feeling of injustice, or self-hate. Then it’s back to doing the very thing you said you weren’t going to do.

Have you noticed the more you focus on trying to stop something, the more you keep doing it? Maybe you even promise God that you will take things seriously with Him. Or that you will leave certain things behind, but that time never comes!

If you want to leave old habits behind, you must take your focus off them. Your problem is not your biggest problem! Perhaps you are thinking: “What’s so wrong about that? Isn’t focusing on the problem the way to eliminate it?”

The problem with focusing on your problem is you ignore the One who will help you solve your problem: God.

When you focus on addiction, temper, or depression, you automatically take your focus off God (who requires 100% of your attention).

Your heart naturally gravitates to what you focus on. If your attention is on the fact that you like to fight, your soul goes to it. From there, your heart will order your mind to turn to it whenever things don’t go your way.

Where has your focus been? You have good intentions and are sincere in trying to change. Yet, when your total focus is on that, you will fall back into it.

So What’s the Solution?

Focus on pleasing God and on getting to know Him better. You must think about things you can do to please Him and draw closer to Him. God says, “Come as you are,” so do just that.

Focus on getting closer to God! When you are focused on God, He will strengthen you to let go of those other things.
