On November 6th, the UBB team had an incredibly impactful day at the Goree Unit, sharing an eventful and heartwarming Thanksgiving celebration with the men there.
The team arrived by noon and began setting up, with 23 inmates volunteering to help prepare for what they thought was an event for another group. Little did they know, the setup was for them.
When Bishop Joshua began the service, he revealed the surprise: a Thanksgiving dinner and celebration were prepared specifically for them. The announcement left the men visibly emotional and deeply moved. The gesture of love was something they hadn’t experienced before.
Moments like these fuel UBB’s mission—knowing that God uses these efforts to bring joy, hope, and blessings to those behind bars. Seeing the happiness on their faces makes every sacrifice and ounce of hard work worth it.
The event began with prayer and a message from Bishop Joshua, who emphasized the power of God’s Word. As the Lord Jesus said, “But He answered and said, ‘It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4)
The celebration continued with singing, dancing, and heartfelt praise to God. The atmosphere was filled with joy and unity. Afterward, the inmates were invited to sit and enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving feast. The menu included turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and all the traditional fixings—a meal some of the men hadn’t tasted in decades.
For many, the meal stirred powerful emotions. Some were reminded of family gatherings and loved ones they hadn’t seen in years. Others expressed gratitude for being part of such a meaningful celebration. Even officers and staff from the unit joined in, creating a sense of one big family united in the moment. At the end of the day, everyone in attendance received a copy of the book The Pleasure of Revenge, a gift to inspire and uplift.
This special day at the Goree Unit was a powerful reminder of the impact of love, generosity, and the Word of God. It was a Thanksgiving to remember—a day of joy, healing, and spiritual renewal.
